Slovakia Travel Tips
Explore Slovakia and discover the best places to visit.
A land of untouched nature, amazing historical sites including one of the world´s highest number of castles and chateaux per capita, magnificent cities, vibrant cultural life, Slovakia is one of Europe’s most spectacular countries, still waiting to be discovered.
Some of the Slovak most popular tourist destinations are its national parks, historical landmarks, including UNESCO World Heritage Sites, numerous spa resorts with healing thermal springs or wine regions in the Southern part of the country. Those looking for nature’s attractions can enjoy everything from the thick forests, rivers, caves, valleys and snowy peaks in the mountains, with a wealth of opportunities for outdoor adventures.
High Tatras, the highest range in the Carpathians with 15 peaks above 2500 m, form a natural border between Slovakia and Poland. They are a designated Unesco Biosphere Reserve, and contain some 100 high-altitude lakes and scenic waterfalls. They can be explored via a network of well marked hiking paths. Slovak nature is still unspoiled and you can find many peaceful places without too many people around.
Larger cities, such as Bratislava, the capital, and Kosice, feature historic architecture, numerous sightseeing opportunities and exciting art scenes, while the traditional villages are the perfect place to get acquainted with local customs.
Slovakia is abundant in folk traditions. Each region has a unique character and folklore – costumes, music, architecture, customs, and dialects. They are presented in folklore festivals organised throughout the country.
Slovakia is a perfect destination also for family holidays. There is a plenty to keep kids interested, including water parks and amusement parks, mountain resorts with child – friendly activities, open-air museums or animal farms.

1 day trip: Devín castle, Bratislava Old Town and Červený kameň castle. Wine tasting in Modra.
Devín castle is one of the oldest castles in Slovakia. Traces of settlement date back to the 5th century B.C. Due to its strategic location, Devin Castle boasts a rich medieval history, having served as a fortress, military station, and a trade center over the centuries, before it was ordered to be ruined by Napoleon himself in 1809, as part of his military neutralization of the region. Standing on a massive cliff, 212 meters high, the castle serves as a museum with several exhibitions. It also offers spectacular panorama views upon the confluence of Danube and Morava rivers, with Austria just across. Its location made the surrounding area part of the former Iron Curtain border zone with Austria, heavily fortified during Cold War.
Bratislava Old Town Walking Tour
Bratislava ranks among the youngest capitals in Europe and, at the same time, among the cities with a rich history dating back more than 5000 years. Situated on the frontiers with Austria and Hungary makes it the only national capital on border with two countries. The location of the city at the very heart of Europe on the banks of the river Danube predestined Bratislava to become a trade crossroads and the centre of many diverse cultures throughout centuries. From the 10th century to 1918, except for short interruptions, Bratislava was part of the Kingdom of Hungary, with the role of its capital and a coronation city of Hungarian monarchs from 1536 until 1830. Bratislava is a mosaic of illustrious past – a medieval and Gothic old town, splendid baroque palaces, the crowning castle – and present pulsating with cultural and social life.
Červený kameň (Red Stone) castle, only 28 km away from Bratislava, is situated in the picturesque surroundings of the Little Carpathian mountains. Originally a stone castle was built in the 13th century as a part of the chain of the Kingdom of Hungary’s frontier defense castles. It was completely rebuilt as a fortress in the first half of the 16th century and later it became a representative noble castle. The well-preserved castle complex with impressive cellar areas contains museum of the aristocracy housing development.
After the castle tour we visit Modra, one of the most important viticulture centres in the Little Carpathians region. We will taste great wines from best local wineries.
2 day trip: Banská Štiavnica
Exceptional town with charisma, rich history, unique architecture and artistic atmosphere makes it one of the most beautiful spots in Slovakia. Once the medieval mining centre, established in the 13th century, grew into a town with Renaissance palaces, churches, castles and elegant squares. The Mining Academy, the first university of mining and one of the oldest technical universities in the world, started here in 1762. The region was home to some of Europe’s most influential mining engineers, whose techniques have been replicated across the world. The urban centre blends into the spectacular mountainous landscape inviting for numerous outdoor activities. The town and its surroundings is listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site.
